Lanikai has developed a natural sunscreen that it safe for your skin and safe for Hawaii’s beloved (and vital) reefs. It’s primary ingredient is zinc oxide, which you will remember as the “white stuff” of the noses of lifeguards at the pool or on the beach. It is gentle to your skin, and comes in several of your favorite Lanikai fragrances, including my favorite Beach. There is also an unscented version which you may prefer.
This year Hawaii passed a law that bans two key ingredients that are in most of the sunscreens out there: oxybenzone and octinoxate. They are used in more than 3,500 of the world’s most popular sunscreens including Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone and Banana Boat.
The bill states that these two products have ” significant harmful impacts on Hawaii’s marine environment and residing ecosystems. ” The act does not go in to place until 2019, but using a natural sunscreen from now on is a good idea.
If these products are harmful to our reefs and ecosystems, it follows that they might not be so good for human beings. Our natural sunscreen is flying off the shelves in the store and customers who are using it tell us it’s great. The skin protection factor (SPF) is 35. You can find it on our website lanikai.com under skin soothing products. We also have aftersun lotions and several healing balms that are useful after being in the sun, or if you do get sunburned.
