Although not native to Hawaii, avocado is plentiful here, and our sharwill avocadoes are delicious. As most of us know, avocado has “good fats” in it. The avocado is really a fruit since it has a stone. Its oil is rich and extremely penetrating, full of vitamins A, D and E, lecithin, as well as potassium. It is often called “the youth mineral.” It also contains proteins, lecithin, beta-carotene and more than twenty percent essential unsaturated fatty acids. The fatty acids contained are palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic. Avocado oil is also high in sterolins, which are reputed to reduce age spots, help heal sun damage and scars. Sterolins, also called plant steroids. help to soften the skin and impart a superior moisturizing effect. It’s great for dehydrated or dry skin, helps with excema and psoriasis and some say it helps with regenerating and softening skin tissue.
Besides reminding us of summer and suntans, coconut oil is considered to be extremely stable, and therefore does not deteriorate or turn rancid easily. Island populations have long considered coconut oil to be a healing and beneficial oil, one which helps with age spots, wrinkles and other skin damage. A natural antioxidant, when used in shampoos and conditioners, coconut oil promotes healthy hair and actually helps prevent damage from some harmful UV rays.

It is said to boost the barrier function of the skin to help water retention.
Many people appreciate lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula officinalis) for its aromatic fragrance, used in soaps, shampoos, and sachets for scenting clothes. The name lavender comes from the Latin root lavare , which means “to wash.” Lavender most likely earned this name because it was frequently used in baths to help purify the body and spirit. However, this herb is also considered a natural remedy for a range of ailments from insomnia and anxiety to depression and mood disturbances. Research has confirmed that lavender produces calming, soothing, and sedative effects. Lanikai Bath and Body’s Hawaiian Lavender is made from the essential oils of french lavender, and combined with Hawaiian healing oils including kukui.
