Ancient Hawaiians called their stone art k’i’i pohaku, or images in stone.

In ancient Hawai‘i, stone carvings were more than art—they were symbols of strength, spirit, and story. These k’i’i pōhaku, or “images in stone,” connected people to their ancestors and to the mana, or power, of the natural world. Inspired by this heritage of strength and resilience, we created Pohaku for Men.

At Lanikai Bath and Body, we believe that strength can be quiet, grounded, and enduring—just like the sandalwood tree. This remarkable tree, known in Hawaiian as ‘iliahi, was once abundant across the islands and prized for its sweet, earthy aroma and powerful medicinal properties. So valuable was ‘iliahi that it became a highly traded resource throughout Polynesia and Asia until its natural supply was exhausted.

True sandalwood takes patience. Its essential oil lives in the heartwood and roots, and takes 15 to 20 years—or even longer—to reach peak potency. The tree itself stands tall at maturity, often growing for 60 to 80 years before it’s ready to share its full aromatic strength. This enduring quality, this quiet fortitude, inspired our Pohaku line.
